またまた 洋書からの歯のある話の紹介をしたい。 タイトルは The Years of Rice and Salt  著者はKIM STANLEY ROBINSONさん。 ２００２年発行のそれほど古くはないフィクションである。 ぺ−次数は７００を超えて大作である。 その小説からteethのでてくる面白い内容の書かれたフレーズを 紹介したい。 page531： They walked through alleys to big merchant house and chandlery in the warren of japantown, and the two Japanese men - the older named Gen, they learned - introduced the young castaways to the proprietress(おかみ) of a boarding house next door. She was a toothless old Japanese woman, in a simplebrown kimono, with a shrine in her hallway(廊下) and reception room. They stepped in her door and began to shed their wet raingear(雨具), and she regarded them with a critical eye, 'Everyone so wet these days,'she complained, 'You look as if they pulled you off the bottom of the bay. Chewed by crabs.' 本当なら最初に書かないといけなかったかもしれないが、 どのような小説かというと 14世紀黒死病といってヨーロッパで大流行し、人口の３〜４割が 亡くなったとされるが小説では99パーセントが死滅したという設定。 そうして現代ではヨーロッパ人は歴史の中心には入っていなくなるという。 中国とイスラム、が急激に勢力を伸ばし インドが二つのスーパーパワーに挟まれうまくやっていくのに苦心する。 ・・・・・ そのうち今のような科学的文明が達成される。 新しい世界が中国によってもたらされる。 急速に西海岸に広がっていく。 一方イスラムは・・・[ここから以降はアマゾンの紹介を英語のまま載せた] Islamic fleet lands at the mouth of the Mississippi. Eventually, the enlightened Indian nation of Travancore comes to the aid of the beleaguered native people of the New World. New technologies appear as the centuries go by and, as often as not, are applied to military ends. Adding a mystical balance and a human note to this counterfactual history is a small cast of recurring characters who live through each episode of the book as soldiers, slaves, philosophers and kings. Dying, they spend time in the afterlife, only to be reborn into the next era, generally with no knowledge of their past lives. |
