こちらも参考にしながら基礎用語などからの詳しい歯科英語運用ができようになると英語圏の歯科医さんとの上手なコミュニケーションやよりよい自分にあった歯科医院さん選びにも役立つかもしれません。（まずは１５単語だけ） フロリダの歯科協会による dental tripから歯科用語関連を抜粋： KEY TERMS 1) receptionist The receptionist is a person who greets you at the dentist’s office. 2) health history A health history is very important information about you. The dentist must know your history to take care of you properly. 3) allergy An allergy is a reaction of the body to something it doesn’t like. Allergies can cause rashes, swelling, sneezing or wheezing. 4) dentist The dentist is the person who takes care of your teeth, gums and mouth. 5) X-ray An X-ray is an image of the inside of your tooth. 6) virus A virus is an ultramicroscopic infectious agent that can cause disease. 7) disinfecting Disinfecting means making germs and bacteria harmless. 8) sterilizing Sterilizing kills all bacteria, germs and viruses. 9) autoclave An autoclave is an oven that sterilizes dental tools using heat. 10) local anesthetics Local anesthetics numb your teeth and gums so that you don’t feel anything during treatment. 11) dental assistant A dental assistant helps dentists in their duties. 12) dental hygienist A dental hygienist is a person who cleans the teeth and gums. |
loose tooth:グラグラの歯という意味。 英語圏で上記の語の使われる例では、how to pul a loose toothのようなタイトルの例でいろいろと見つけられます。このほかの組み合わせによく使われてるのは、 medicine、 pain、 treatment、 child、 fillingなどがあるようです。 また、loose toothという言葉の面白い意味の使われ方に、 Amery loose toothという言葉があります。 今現在も地球温暖化の影響で氷河の氷が溶け海水上昇が問題になっていますが、 それらの氷河をモニターするために調査・研究をしている組織の loose tooth rift monitoringという言葉の使用を見つけ、グラグラしてる歯（大きな氷河が小さくなってグラグラしたもの？）にもう一度rift(持ち上げ)しようという思いをこめてモニターして行こうという気持ちで付けられたのかなぁ。？と推察しました。 人の歯に地球の大自然を重ねて表現している面白い使われ方だと感じます。 |

今日はいい歯の日(11月8日)だからこそ |

今日はいい（11月）歯（8日）の日だそうです。 歯並びの関心を高めて噛み合わせの大切さをPRするために日本矯正歯科学会が定めたそうです。 こんな日こそ普段あまり気にしない人も歯並びなどに特に関心をもって歯のことを考えてみてはいかがでしょうか？ 普段は並びのことなんてぜんぜん考えたことが無い人でも多くの人が以下のような関心をもってる事を知った後にはずいぶん最初のイメージと変わるものがあるかもしれません。 「歯並びと虫歯の関係」や「歯並びとかみ合せ」や 「歯並びと美顔」 「歯並びと体の健康」 「歯並びと体調の関係」 などが主な人々の関心を集めているようです。 ちなみに「歯並び」のことを英語で言うとtooth arrangement（alignment） とか teeth arrangement（alignment）とかというそうです。また「歯列」のことをarrangement（alignment） of the teethとか teeth arrangement（alignment）とかというそうです。 多くの海外の記事の中から面白い記事を見つけたので一部抜粋して紹介します。 以下の文をかんたんに要約してみると ------------------------- 中国には少なくとも2人は同じ髪型をしているという統計を示すことができる。これは剥げてたりしてる人がいることはこの統計では仮定はしないということ。 同様に中国には同じ歯列の人が少なくとも2人はいるという統計を示せるという。これも同様に歯が無い人や同じ位置にある歯をもったひとは仮定しないということ。 ------------------------- とても面白い例えだと思いませんか？ 以下はオリジナルの文章の抜粋部分です。 -------- Is it possible to prove statistically that there must be at least two people in China who have the same number of hairs on their heads? Try to stick to pure probability and not to assumptions such as, "There must be many bald people in China." Also, is it possible to prove statistically that there must be at least two people in China with the same arrangement of teeth (i.e., missing or existing in the same positions)? 今、米国では次期大統領へのオバマ氏とクリントン氏が激戦しているがそこからの記事で歯を使った面白いフレーズを載っていたので紹介。 Clinton Fights tooth and nail For Texas. まるで野生の中で戦っている動物のような表現でだれでもわかる英語の表現である。 その他に面白い表現でsweet tooth というものがある。 意味は甘党と言う意味で以下のような文章のような使われかたがある。 Why Are Some Born With sweet tooth? Craving sweets may not be something you learn. it could be genetic. Craving sweets may not be something you learn -- it could be genetic. ※craving sweets:あまい物を欲しがること。 また最近の研究分野ではイスラエルからのニュースで 「Drug-Dispensing Tooth Could Be Controlled By Cell Phone」 携帯電話で調剤する歯の装置というものがある。 現在は人での臨床試験中で2010年の実用化を目指しているとのこと。 |

いくつか米国の研究機関等から生の英語の抜粋で 現在の歯科治療等についていくつかみてみよう。 なお訳語については要約だけにした。 最初の3文はNIHからの読み物[TOOTH DECAY]から抜粋一部修正。 ■50年前は・・・・ The combination of tooth decay and periodontal diseases left 17 million people age 45 and older ・about three out of 10 Americans ■虫歯予防や歯科治療が進んだ現在・・・ It is estimated that from 1979 through 1989 alone, the American public saved more than billion in dental expenditures due to the power of prevention. 歯のある面白い小説[3 from out there] |

1950年代に出版された古いが面白い小説がある。 3 from out there と言う小説 その中からDamon Knightさんの書かれたDOUBLE MEANINGという短篇は面白い。 次のような文章から始まり興味をそそぐ。 Somewhere in the city, a monster was hiding... Double Meaningは約７０ぺーじの短いものだが英語もそこまで難しくないので面白いと思う。 そこから一部わたしのお気に入りのフレーズと歯のある文章。 ◎If like measures produice like ends, then that's the way it will be, whether you like it or not but history never repeats itself,... ◎But that was precisely the kind of world that Pembun came from, whether he was human or Rithian; that was the unchanging essence of the ancient Unreason , beaten now on Earth but not yet stamped out of the Cosmos.That was the enemy.... ☆ his head was supported by hollow(空洞) in the bolster(長枕); a rigid harness(機具) covered his neck. his mouth was slightly open under the coarse(粗い) black mustachios, and a curved suction tube was hooked over his lower teeth.... ◎with the expression that almost never altered: direct, gravely intent, receptive. her skin and eyes were so clear, her emotional responses so deliberate and pallid, that she seemd utterly , almost abstractly normal: a type personified, a symbol, a mathematical fiction.... damon knightさんの作品は本当に面白い。 |

デンタル諺はたくさんありいろいろなところで紹介されているが いくつか面白く関心のあるようなものを紹介したい。 口の中を見ることが楽しいと感じられることわざ：歯科医向け。 １．A dentist at work in his vocation always looks down in the mouth. とっても美しい表現：William R. Alger 変わることがないパールの輝きがが暗くなっても歯は輝きつずけるのか。 ２．Even pearls are dark before the whiteness of his teeth. 少し悲しめの諺：George D. 今年の言葉の偽に対する思いとこれからの日本、本当はいい言葉 |

今年は日本のイメージをダウンさせるような事件が多かった。 偽ということばや発言がいったいいくつくらい使われたのだろうか。 もっといい意味での偽をつかいたいものである。 よく悪い意味でつかわれる「偽」の英語で言う主なものは 虚偽の：fallacious、untrue 偽装ビーフ：falsely labeled meat fudged：うまくごまかす などの悪いイメージの言葉があるが、 いいイメージで使われそうな偽という言葉に いったいどのような言葉があるのだろうか。 少し調べて面白いものをがあったので掲載した。 １：「自分の為」「人の為」「みんなの為」「社会の為」 ２：「巧偽拙誠」（こうぎせっせい）：どんなに巧みなうそでも誠には勝てぬ。 ３：「自心偽無」 英語でのいい意味での面白いものが見つかれば 後ほど追加しておきたい。 |

ダビンチコードから学ぶLeonardoFibonacciのフィボナッチ級数の歯 |

有名な映画になった DA VINCI CODEの原著にこのようなフレーズが出てくる。 Fache studied the numbers. Each term was indeed the sum of the two previous, and yet Fache could not imagine what the relevance of all this was to Saunier's death. Mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci created this succesion of numbers in the thirteenth century. The jaguar dropped his head back onto his leg and closed his eyes. ・・・・ Stay focused on Salage. Riordan's voice softened. Hold on for me. Just hold on, Juliett. Flames ran over the male jaguar's fur. Bright red and orange flames tipping the ends of the spotted coat and engulfing the animal. 歯がなくても美しい人 |

またまた 洋書からの歯のある話の紹介をしたい。 タイトルは The Years of Rice and Salt  著者はKIM STANLEY ROBINSONさん。 ２００２年発行のそれほど古くはないフィクションである。 ぺ−次数は７００を超えて大作である。 その小説からteethのでてくる面白い内容の書かれたフレーズを 紹介したい。 page531： They walked through alleys to big merchant house and chandlery in the warren of japantown, and the two Japanese men - the older named Gen, they learned - introduced the young castaways to the proprietress(おかみ) of a boarding house next door. She was a toothless old Japanese woman, in a simplebrown kimono, with a shrine in her hallway(廊下) and reception room. They stepped in her door and began to shed their wet raingear(雨具), and she regarded them with a critical eye, 'Everyone so wet these days,'she complained, 'You look as if they pulled you off the bottom of the bay. Chewed by crabs.' 本当なら最初に書かないといけなかったかもしれないが、 どのような小説かというと 14世紀黒死病といってヨーロッパで大流行し、人口の３〜４割が 亡くなったとされるが小説では99パーセントが死滅したという設定。 そうして現代ではヨーロッパ人は歴史の中心には入っていなくなるという。 中国とイスラム、が急激に勢力を伸ばし インドが二つのスーパーパワーに挟まれうまくやっていくのに苦心する。 ・・・・・ そのうち今のような科学的文明が達成される。 新しい世界が中国によってもたらされる。 急速に西海岸に広がっていく。 一方イスラムは・・・[ここから以降はアマゾンの紹介を英語のまま載せた] Islamic fleet lands at the mouth of the Mississippi. Eventually, the enlightened Indian nation of Travancore comes to the aid of the beleaguered native people of the New World. New technologies appear as the centuries go by and, as often as not, are applied to military ends. Adding a mystical balance and a human note to this counterfactual history is a small cast of recurring characters who live through each episode of the book as soldiers, slaves, philosophers and kings. 洋書の歯のある小説から |

今回紹介するのは １９６０頃の出版されたとても古いが名著である C.S.LewisのOut of the silent planetというもの。 いくつかの洋書を見たが 歯[teeth]のでてくるフレーズで美しくて面白い表現を探していたが なかなかでて来ない。 30分程度みていたらようやく一文に出くわすことができた。 その前にこの小説にでてきた文を２、３紹介する。 まず始めから読者をひきつけるこういうフレーズの話から始まる。 THE LAST DROPS of the thundershower had hardly ceased falling when the Pedestrian stuffed his map into his poket, settled his pack more comfortably on his tired shoulders, and stepped out from the shelter of a large chestnut-tree into the middle of the road. こういう文章も好きな人がいるかもしれない。 Divine indicated his massive and loud-voice companion. 'The Weston,' he added. 'You know.The great Physcist. もう直ぐ１3:00時ですね。 みなさんはお昼の歯磨きはされましたか？ １日２回か３回は必ず歯磨きをすることは 現在一番、手軽にできて効果が大きい予防法になっています。 日本でも英国、米国でも世界中で朝、お昼、夜になると 時刻は違ってもこの時間帯になるとみんな一斉に歯を磨きます。 子供も大人も大統領も総理大臣もみな同じです。 そういえば今年5月、フランスの大統領に就任したサルコジ大統領 お父さんは、大統領が5歳の時、子供らを見捨てて離婚してしまい、 生活が大変だったにもかかわらず、大統領の母は弁護士となり、 子供たちもみんな立派（大統領の弟は小児科医）になっている。 また大統領はタバコもお酒もやりません。 好物はチョコレートだそうです。(w~-^w） 大統領の子供の時は、 お母さんからこんな風に言われていたのかな？ 歯を磨いた？：Tu t's lave les dents? ちなみに歯を磨くは：me laver les dents 歯を磨くのを忘れないで: N'oublie pas de te brosser les dents! 歯が痛くなった時は、 歯が痛いんです：J'ai mal aux dents. 痛い歯が一本あるんです：J'ai une dent qui me fait mal. 我慢ができないほど歯が痛い:J'ai une rage de dents. 明後日歯医者の予約をしてる:Apres-demain. j'ai rendez-vous chez le dentiste. |

喫煙英語（今年の目標は禁煙？） |

だんだんと、今年も残り１ヶ月と少しとなりました。 皆さんは去年、どんな目標を立てましたか？ 目標の達成度はどれくらいですか？ かなり古い本ですが、 英語のジョーク 森浩二（創元社） [タバコのやめられない人へ」と題してのシンプルな英語をみつけたので紹介です。言うまでもありませんが、タバコは肺がんリスクが高いだけでなく歯の見た目も悪くすることは常識的なことです。 IF you made a NEW Year's resolution to stop smoking and then found you couldn't do it, the experts say you can at least help make your smoking less harmful if you follow four simple rules: ----Don't inhale, or inhale less frequently. ----Smoke slowly; fast smoking increases nicotine levels from 4 to 50 percent. ----Just smoke three-quarters of the cigarette; toxic substances increases up to 10 times in the last quarter of the cigarette. ----Additional filtration is especially beneficial even for filter cigarette. A chemical filter using silica gel is the most effective. 要約： 正月に禁煙の誓いを実現できなかった人へ 専門家は以下の４点に従えばある程度喫煙の害を押さえられると言う。 煙は吸い込んではいけません。吸いこむなら少量頻度でやりなさい。 ゆっくり吸いなさい。早く吸えばニコチンレベルが４〜５０％増えます。 タバコは４分の３までにしなさい。毒素は最後の４分の１には１０倍含。 フィルター付きのタバコを吸でもさらに追加のフィルターを使うと効果的。 化学フィルターがもっとも効果的。 ジョークレベルはかなり低いです（ほとんど効果なしかも(w^-^w)）が、 健康・英語レベルが基礎的なものでしたので紹介しました。 もっと面白くてためになる英語を見つけ 作り、ご紹介したいと思います。 |
